The Significance of Therapy

Mental health is essential to our well-being. Studies show that therapy can alleviate most mental distress. In fact, there is a lot of evidence that says therapy is an essential part of treatment for mood disorders, substance use or abuse disorders and, in fact, any mental health issue that plagues us. Therapy involves more than just “talking about your problems.” While this step is extremely useful, resolution of a problem is more powerful.

Therapy offers resolution by helping you define your goals, teaching you to take the steps to reach them, and helping you overcome the fear of achieving them. During therapy, you will learn to identify your triggers for relapse, learn to solve problems, and develop a plan for coping with crisis.

Types of Therapy

CBT

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is different from the traditional “talk therapy,” as it is focused on both the present and future. It is goal-oriented and helps you identify and correct your inaccurate thoughts about you, others, and the world.

In each session, we will focus on specific life stressors and help you discover new and improved coping skills. Because it works best when you are invested, I will ask you to practice your newfound skills through assigned weekly practice assignments.

CPT for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Cognitive Processing Therapy focuses on past trauma and its related symptoms and problems. You will learn to identify and correct the thoughts that keep you stuck in your past. Like CBT, you will learn new coping skills and will be asked to complete weekly practice assignments designed to promote the change process.

Interpersonal Therapy

This therapy is goal-oriented and addresses your symptoms and social relationships. It focuses on the present and helps you grow and change by concentrating on establishing new relationship skills.

Motivational Enhancement Therapy

Through this counseling model, I can assist individuals in resolving ambivalence about substance use. I use this approach to motivate change internally.

Conflict Resolution for Couples

If you are in an intimate relationship and are having interpersonal issues, I can help you. I can guide you on creating healthy ways to resolve your differences.
